The world of KOMPAS is getting bigger. Much bigger.
We’re going Stateside!
A home from home for those of us based in KOMPAS’ London HQ, it should come as no surprise that the Golden City, glorious San Francisco, came top of our list for our latest location launch. With its hipster vibe and endless quirky bars, restaurants, shops, street art, as well as its really famous bridge, San Francisco even has weather as volatile as ours.
Forget the cable cars and tour of Alcatraz. Discover the real San Francisco and experience The City like a local. And if you are a local, rediscover your city.
We’ll be bringing you the latest restaurant and bar openings, mapping out the best street art, listing the quirkiest shops we can find, while throwing in a few truly hidden gems here and there as well, like the Coconut man of Dolores Park; what could be better than fresh coconut and a shot of Rum while looking out across the city’s skyline? Talking of parks, San Francisco has over 220 to explore, more than any other city in the US. If you’re an active type Presidio Park has 24 miles of trails to hike, producing views across both the Bay and the Pacific (as well as the Golden Gate Bridge). We can’t wait to get started.
Our first pit stop will be the Mission District, famous for its Latin roots, foodies, fashionistas, urban murals, and the best burritos outside of Mexico. Every corner you turn is as instagram-worthy as the last, especially the Clarion Alley Mural Project [CAMP]; community-based and artist-run, this is “a place where culture and dignity speak[s] louder than the rules of private property.” Running along the entire block between the 17th and 18th Mission and Valencia streets, CAMP is an amalgamation of nearly 30 years’ worth of artistic expression and freedom, an aesthetically-charged history of the changing values and beliefs of some of the city’s resident artists. This is how you discover the real San Francisco.
With an abundance of restaurants and bars and things to do, use our planning function to create an itinerary for the day to make sure you don’t miss out on a single bite of burrito. Talking of burritos, argue like a local over which Mexican restaurant makes the best. Current debates center over rice or no rice as a filling… Create your own ‘Best Burrito List’ by visiting as many tacqerias as possible. Try La Tacqueria or Tacolicious as a start.
If you enjoy introducing friends to new places and receiving praise for ‘discovering’ hidden gems, then we want to hear from you. Become part of the KOMPAS community where you’ll be able to contribute to the content and direction of the app, with some great perks to come!
