KOMPAS was started by Tom and Olivia, two Exeter students on their year abroad in Munich. The pair explored Munich belly-first, chowing down on all that the food scene had to offer. Once they’d eaten their fill, they expanded to exploring abandoned railway stations and street art in underground hidden passages. They even (hesitantly) sampled homemade vodka from a man in a hidden Franco-Slavic bar. They started posting their findings on a Facebook page and created an Instagram account, Hidden Munich. The Instagram quickly developed into a much bigger idea: a city exploration app to help people discover the amazing adventures hidden just around the corner. Two years later, Tom and Olivia’s vision has become a reality: the KOMPAS app is now available on iOS and Android and has over 25,000 users.
It wasn’t all fun and games getting here though. With both of them trying to balance university exams with late-night pitch deck sessions and countless business plan drafts, the fuel tank was running low. The idea, meanwhile, was slowly becoming more and more refined.
It was at this point that Kurt joined the team. With his keen, beady eye and knack for fine design detail, he produced a mock-up that they were ready to shout about to the world. The addition of Doug brought with him some powerful coding skills. These were put to the test as he worked, night after night, at speeds that could break records, on creating what would become the KOMPAS app. Together they were a team that could rival the strength of the Hulk!
We’ve come a long way since Tom and Olivia were exploring Munich. The KOMPAS app is now revolutionising the way that people discover new restaurants, cafes, activities and more in 6 cities across the UK and Germany. We’ve been roaming through the nooks and crannies of these cities to discover the undiscovered, so that you can save time on finding the hidden places that light your fire.
The KOMPAS app uses a unique combination of local expertise and machine learning to create personalised itineraries and foolproof recommendations. This powerful combination has scored us a commercial partnership with London Midland and gained us a paid pilot with VISA after we won the VISA Everywhere Initiative. Company Address has highlighted us as one of the top 10 most inspirational startups in the UK and Startups has declared that we will soon be a travel essential. We think so too! We’ve also been named one of the top 500 Deep-Tech companies in the world by HelloTomorrow and we’re part of one of the world’s leading AI accelerators, Creative Destruction Lab.
Since launching the app, our team has more than doubled. We’ve recently upsized our office and are slowly unpacking. Our incredible developer team have been busier than bees and more creative than Picasso. They’ve recently released version 2.5 of our app on iOS, which has made it even easier to explore. With just one click the secrets of the city will reveal themselves. Now they’re working away on bringing the update to Android too.
Our marketing and growth team has also seen some great results. We’ve been growing at an average of 60% month-on-month and now have over 25,000 users! Our community has given us an overwhelming amount of support and sent us heaps of tips to keep us going. This contribution from you, our users, is vital and we want to continue to help those like us, who want to find the most authentic and hidden places.
This support is why we decided to open up the opportunity for our users to get involved with our mission via a crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs. We’re now over the half-way mark and will be putting the money raised towards refining the app and adding new features, launching into more cities and expanding our community. To learn more about how you can join our mission to create the world’s best travel app check out our Seedrs campaign page.
We’re extremely excited for the future and hope you are too!
